THE WALKING FREE PROGRAM

Throughout much of the world, amputee victims of landmines, earthquakes, motor vehicle accidents, industrial & agricultural accidents, birth defects, disease and war receive little or no continuing medical treatment. Physicians for Peace designed the Walking Free program to assist developing nations by establishing sustainable prosthetic and rehabilitation centers. Efforts include: prosthetic and orthotic production, clinical and academic education programs, direct patient care, surgical and medical management and public education.

Following great success with the first initiative in
Diyarbakir, Turkey in 2000, Physicians for Peace expanded the program to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 2001 and has plans to implement the program in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Manila, Philippines and
Basra, Iraq.
The Walking Free program has had much success, including: conducting more than 20 research, education and training missions in developing nations, providing two foreign prosthetists with three-month specialized academic and clinical training and providing clinical and academic training to more than one thousand doctors, nurses, therapists and practitioners in developing nations. In addition, Physicians for Peace has helped more than ten thousand patients with prosthetic and orthotic needs and have provided more than $2 million in prosthetic and orthotic in-kind contributions including rehabilitation and surgical supplies and equipment.
